Description
Hon. Marriott Brosius was born March 7, 1843 in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Pa. His parents were Clarkson Brosius and Rachel Hambleton Brosius. The were Friends or Quakers, and farmers. he attended the public school and teh Academy taught by Thomas Baker. At the breakging outo f the Civil War, at the call of President Lincoln he enlisted in Company K, 97th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, on November 7, 1861. On May 20, 1864 in Battle of Bermuda Hundred, in a charge against Pickett's Division, he was wounded in the shoulder. He reenlisted when his three years expired and was discharged January 2, 1865. After his discharge, he taught school and attended Millersville State Normal School. He entered teh Law Office of Thomas E. Franklin and later grauated from the Law Department of the University of Michigan and was admitted to the Lancaster Bar in 1868. In 1882 he was nominated for the office of Congressman at Large by the Republicans, but was defeated, although he received several hundred votes more than the ticket. In 1888 he was elected as representative from Lancaster County. He died in 1901 on returning home from adjournment of Congress by reason of a stroke. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, by his wife and two of his children. I. C. Brosius, who presents this picture of Mr. Brosius, studied law under him. A fuller history of MR. Brosius will be found in Biographical Annals of Lancaster County, page 16.
