Letter from Nahum Capen to Harriet Lane Johnston referring to the forty letters that he had received from President Buchanan. The letters had been relayed from Mr. Reed to Mr. Curtis to Rev. Dr. Buchanan, who has unpacked 18 of them and not yet found the paper giving the conversation between President Buchanan and Col. Benton. Mr. Capen would like to give her his index to the letters and visit her in Baltimore if she wishes. Mt. Ida.

Swarr expressing sorrow at Mrs. Johnston’s exceptions to Mr. Swift’s excellent report, because now the unpleasant facts to which she refers will be more widely distributed; suggesting that payment to the other heirs be postponed until settlement of the threatened proceedings; approving the hiring of Mr. North and making arrangements for him to see the proceedings of the equity suit; and planning to meet with Mr. Preston of Boston who is strongly recommended by Mr. Capen to be the biographer of James Buchanan. Swarr indicating he could not find the copy of the agreement sent to Mrs. Johnston which she returned unsigned; supposing that the Johnstons are the only ones required to make depositions on Saturday; reporting that Mr. Preston brought letters from Mr. Capen, G. S. Hillard, Judge Payne, and Colonel Greene supporting his bid to become James Buchanan’s biographer; noting that another possible candidate for biographer is H. B. Dawson, editor of the New York Historical Magazine, who has written several articles favorable to James Buchanan, and asking for news of what the Johnstons swear to at the deposition. 327, 329 &331 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.
