Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston returning a corrected deed; enclosing Mrs. Ellis’ letter; saying that Mr. Schell has left and enjoyed the “young ones”; noting that Jessica is turning into a young lady at age seventeen; regretting that Mrs. Lane still has not visited; noting that James Buchanan spent the day; and that the Nevins “are kind & sociable as ever and that James thinks that there is a “promising condition between Harriet & the embryo Bishop.” Wheatland.

Swarr promising a trip to Lancaster soon; mentioning that Mrs. Dunham has sent a receipt for the amount of her mortgage and proposing that Mrs. Dunham’s father, rather than G. W. Hecker whom she has recommended, is sufficient to enter satisfaction on her mortgage; discussing an enquiry from his son James about whether James Buchanan owned land in Forest County; and promising to send the check to Jessie Magaw. One of two teacups. Inside of cup is lined with gold. Gilt decor forms a wide band on the exterior around the rim that and connects to and covers the handle and a vertical gilt band that connects to the flared foot. The body of the bowl is white with a flower and landscape hand-painted scene.

In 1995 the JBF staff assigned the Object ID W.95.69.2 to this Compote as a FIC probably because original paper records were not found.
In March 2023 the paper file has been found that identifies Lois Cassatt Thayer as the donor in 1935. Mrs. Thayer was the daughter to Alexander Cassatt and his wife, Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt. Maria Lois Buchanan was the daughter to Rev. Dr. Edward Y. Buchanan, the youngest sibling to President James Buchanan.
One of three demitasse cups. Inside of cup is lined with gilt decor that extends over the cup's rim. The rim gilding connects to two vertical gilt bands and a band around the base forming a frame around varied handpainted landscape scenes; the cup handle is also gilded. The remainder of the outer body has a solid pink hue.

In March 2023 the paper file has been found that identifies Patty Lane Fayer Eldridge as the donor in September 1963. Mrs. James W. Eldridge was the daughter to Patty Lane Fay and the great niece to Harriet Lane Johnston. Patty Lane Fay was daughter to James Buchanan Lane, the first-born to Jane Buchanan Lane, President James Buchanan's sister.
Freestanding, cast-iron stove inserted in firebox. Open at front with baffles at rear of stove. The stove's half-round cast iron hearth is decorated with radiating lines and sits over the fireplace's marble hearth. The cast hearth also features a raised cylindrical bar held in place by three vertical supports; each support has an opening that the cylinder passes through and each features a flat, beaded mushroom finial topped with a ball. The stove's firebox has an outward curved apron that features an ogee curve design. Mounted above the apron is a plain retention bar to hold back coals. This bar had five diamond shaped finials of which only one remains intact. The opening of the firebox is framed by a rounded double bullnose design. The stove has a flat and square backing that covers the fireplace's oblong firebox opening and features a beaded rope decor.
