The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 1 Correspondence, Subseries 1 contains letters to James Buchanan and Subseries 2 contains letters from James Buchanan. Within these subseries, the letters are arranged chronologically, dating from 1819-1868.
This collection contains letters, both to and from James Buchanan. The letters from Buchanan range from the different periods of his life-as a private citizen and lawyer, senator, and ambassador to Russia and Britain; his Presidential term from 1857 to 1861; and his later years until his death in 1868. The earlier letters include details of his travels, political matters and the military, social engagements and responsibilities, his responsibilities as a political figure, and accounts of family chatter and gossip. He also discusses at length, in his letters to and about Harriet Lane, his opinions of whom she should marry, his opinions about her social encounters and interactions, her living situations, and her livelihood. Buchanan also often wrote about his Christian beliefs, especially during the later years of his life. Letters from his later years detail the day-to-day life at home in Wheatland, including some of his guests, his servants, and his illnesses as the end of his life neared.
The letters that are addressed to James Buchanan range in different topics, concerning military affairs, political and legal information, and family chatter. Other letters include details of Buchanan's financial matters that are in reference to loans, Buchanan's investments and purchases, deeds and bonds. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. The James Buchanan Family Papers collection is organized into eight parts: Part 1 Papers of James Buchanan, Part 2 Papers of Harriet Lane Johnston, Part 3 Papers of James Buchanan Henry, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Part 5 Papers of Other members of the Buchanan Family, Part 6 Papers of Hiram B. Swarr, Part 7 Papers of Jonathan Messersmith Foltz, and Part 8 Papers of Others (Not Part of the Family). The papers are arranged by category within each part.
The correspondence is both professional and personal. The letters provide information about family and social events, business and military affairs, social and political history, health and illnesses, religious beliefs, education, friendships, domestic staff, and Wheatland. Political letters specifically highlight the Democratic Party in the United States in the early to mid-nineteenth century, as well as foreign policy and politics while Buchanan was the ambassador to Russia and England. Personal letters share family, local, regional, and international news between family members and friends.
Financial and legal documents include business papers, property records, estate papers, plans for James Buchanan's tomb, and investments. James Buchanan's 1856 presidential campaign and 1857 inauguration are captured in campaign ephemera, political cartoons, Democratic tickets, invitations to the inaugural ball, newspaper articles, and a political song. Other items in the collection include speeches, ephemera, genealogy, diplomas and certificates, account books, scrapbooks, newspaper articles, invitations, programs, pastoral records, and poetry.

This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane recalling a visit of Mr. Baker; completing his business on the farm; visiting with Governor Porter in Lancaster; stating that he opened her letter to Miss Hetty since she had left with Mrs. Wise and her children for “the place in Chester County”; replying that he had not been invited to the wedding, but she will unless they “desire to alienate themselves from your society”; expressing happiness that Blanche looks better; commenting on her “strange inquiry” about Lt. Belger and that he is gentleman and aide to General Revere; asking her to tell Edward that he has not been informed about the Weaver wedding; and stating that he won’t subscribe to Judge Upshur’s essay since he has out-Calhouned Calhoun. With envelope addressed to Oxford Church, Philadelphia. Wheatland.

advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sadly reporting that “Dick, the Canary Bird” was killed by an owl or other “varment,” saying that the dinner with the Hiesters was pleasant enough and Mr. Hiester did not feel uncomfortable in “long-tailed coat” but he needs to learn more about “the rules of Society,” and that Blanche Nevin is sure that Captain Franklin and Miss Sherman are truly engaged even though he “did not distinguish himself at the Battle of Chancellorville.” Wheatland.
