Title: Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston

Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

Description: Letter from Jasper Yeates to his wife, Sarah in which he described the journey by stagecoach from Lancaster to Lancaster with their young grandson, Yeates. Jasper knew that his wife wanted to hear how their grandson fared on the journey to Philadelphia-if he slept, how he behaved, and what he ate-and that he was back with his family in Philadelphia.
