Description
Handwritten fragment of a letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. Marked "Evening" at top, most likely page 2 of a letter. Letter includes thoughts about his family; fear of being forgotten by his kids; story of capturing a Rebel soldier at South Mountain and how he identified with that soldier having a similar family situation.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. Location is "In Camp 8 miles West of Frederick." Letter written in the early morning, the day of the battle of South Mountain. Text details conditions in the chase of the Rebels through Frederick, Maryland and his feeling "that a great Battle will be fought between here and Hagerstown within a few days — perhaps today." Notes General Burnside's compliment of the 45th Regiment and tells Annie to "take the children and go to Lebanon" if Confederate forces should approach Columbia.

Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. From Camp Opposite, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Letter discusses pay, business concerns and financial affairs. Expresses his displeasure at the removal of General Burnside from his command. Welsh attributes his removal to the ineptitude of subordinate generals, especially Hooker, Sumner, Franklin, and Porter. Speaks of his confidence in Burnside, Rosecrans, and Butler. Notes the promotion and potential promotions of several colonels. Concludes with an inquiry about the health of the family and an expression of love for all.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.
