Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston reporting the departure of Mrs. Shunk, of whom he thinks very highly, to visit relations in Maryland and Washington; saying that Thomas and Rosana are leaving, and he is “not sorry for it”; saying he has invited Annie to come and bring Alice; reporting the visit of Robert Nevin and that Wilberforce is still in town perhaps because of his leaving Forney’s firm; hoping the baby is well and looking forward to a visit; reporting the illness of Governor Porter; saying that Mrs. Lane told him Mrs. George W. Franklin was the mother of a son; unselfishly reporting that “fair” Judith is marrying Mr. Richard Culling, though his income is not much; hoping Mr. Shull will call; and saying that Miss Hetty received her letter. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

Johnston expressing great joy that Harriet and child are now well, family chatter concerning Henrietta and Lois, Mr. Powell’s funeral, Mrs. Lane and John, Eskridge Lane, Blanche Nevin, gossip about the engagement of Mr. North and “Minnie” Franklin, Robert Nevin in Rome, Mr. Cassat of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the return of Thomas and Rosana.
