Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing his pleasure that she is leaving Washington soon for Baltimore to meet Mr. Johnston’s family, regretting she has not seen Maria Weaver, relating that Miss Hetty is well again but getting old, Thomas is staying at the insistence of Father Keenan, Miss Annie is most agreeable, asking her opinion of Mr. Phillips, and praising Lily and Mr. Berghmans while complaining of indigestion. Envelope addressed care of Mr. Berghmans of the Belgian Legation.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on her new house; stating that Mrs. Schell will arrive just after the departure of Miss Snyder; lamenting the lack of good servants and wondering if the new chamber maid will stay very long; noting that the house is “topsy turvy” because of housecleaning; expecting Thomas Gordon and wife along with Mrs. Brinton’s servants to arrive on Tuesday although Miss Hetty might not like the arrangement; and promising to pass Harriet’s message to Blanche. Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.
