Lincoln S. Conrad Papers
Title
Lincoln S. Conrad Papers
Description
This collection contains some of the personal papers of Lincoln S. Conrad. The correspondence pertains to his search for employment in 1929, preceding the stock market crash in October of that year. Although there are some rejection letters, many of the letters invite Mr. Conrad for an interview. The correspondence and enclosed application forms are interesting from the perspective of business history as companies from Philadelphia to Chicago are represented. A copy of a 1933 radio address examines debt, financial policies and legislation during the Great Depression.
Admin/Biographical History
Lincoln S. Conrad was born 9 February 1899, the son of Leonard S. and Lillie A. Conrad. The family apparently resided in Lancaster County during his childhood, but as an adult Lincoln lived in various towns, including Lititz, Lancaster and Wyomissing. In 1930, he and his wife, Ruth, lived in Reading. He was employed as a silk weaver by Stehli Silk Co. in 1918. He furthered his education and career opportunities by enrolling in the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton where he studied salesmanship and subjects related to appliance repair and sales.
