Henry expressing his disgust with the Philippines, especially the lack of drinking water; mentions the seizure of Iloilo City, a town of 25,000; liked Hong Kong and Honolulu; the U. S. volunteers are “tramps and bums”; the national guard system is a failure; sailed around Panay Island (where Iloilo is located) and is afraid most of the tour of duty will be in Manila Bay; and has received mail from Syd. and the boys. USS Charleston, Iloilo, P. I.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009.
