Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston answering her inquiries about Mr. Christian B. Herr since someone in Baltimore has an interest in him, giving him high praise; regretting to tell her Willie “doubtless” has consumption and that since Annie cannot come, he might write Maria Weaver; reporting that he has visited the Lanes but the boys have not visited him; happily saying that Mrs. Lane hosted “a dinner of gentlemen” for Mrs. Schell he sponsored but that Mrs. Lane will not marry McEvoy; gladly saying that Miss Hetty is up and about on crutches, that Lizzie is a good cook and Mary a tolerable waiter; wishing her a happy birthday and admonishes her not to follow the examples of Mrs. R. and Mrs. U.; and saying the Nevins always ask about her. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.

Description
Oil on canvas of Christian Herr House (often called the Hans Herr House) with a man and a woman in front. Green hues with glossy finish. Three quarter inch wooden frame with rounded outer edge and lower inner border. Painted gold with recessed markings in a darker color.
Inscription: Signed lower right: "17-CHHR-19 Lancaster, H.P. Palmer 1926." Sticker on paper back: " Hans Herr House painted by H. P. Palmer" Below is label: "Christian Herr House Built 1719 Oldest house in our county"
On back of canvas on pencil script: "Hans Herr House 1719 Willow Street, Lancaster County Pa H.P. Palmer July , 1926"

VAP update: paper backing is loose in places and has acidified. Paper tape from previous repair has loosened. Behind is early 20th century calendar art of woman, dog and child in lamplight
VAP update: 9/1/2015 acidic backing replaced with acid free board. Original backings can be found in object file.
