Marble Fragment from Original Tomb of James Buchanan
Description
Fragment from James Buchanan's tomb in Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, PA. Rectangular base with relief carving of three oak leaves on one short branch with an acorn on top. White marble. On back: paper with handwritten ink: 'a piece of waste marble from (the?) Tomb of Hon. James Buchanan.

Found by donor at gravesite. From original tombstone. Gift of Jim McMullin per Pat Clarke 4/5/2023
Letter to James Buchanan from William Colebrooke ferociously attacking Buchanan for his “assailing” Governor Findlay and implying that there might be a family feud in the background. In an envelope of the Royal Insurance Co. of Liverpool, England, Henry N. Howell, Agent, Lancaster, Pa. On front of envelope: “letter of ‘Colebrook’ to ‘Buchanan’ refers to campaign fight of July 1820.” On back of envelope: “Major Charles M. Howell, Chief Marshall of Puncia.” [1820]

Swarr enclosing receipt for money sent; concerned about the erection of a monument to James Buchanan, especially the plans of Mr. Howell and Mr. Gaddess; asking about Mr. Buchanan’s disposition of James’ canes; and asking if the amount of a loan due bears interest.
