This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

Framed miniature portrait of Major Charles M. Howell (1814-1903) of Philadelphia and Lancaster. Gilded molded wooden frame. Image of man with brown hair, military uniform with high collar. Image measures 7/8" in width by 1 1/8" in length. Overall dimension of frame is 4 1/2" in with and 5" in length. Hand written note on back reads: "On Ivory artist unknown / Miniature of / Major Charles M. Howell, as / major of The National Greys of / Philadelphia, Pa., Commission / issued & signed by Governor Porter / August 3rd 1842. / Born in Philadelphia Apr.24, 1814 / Died in Lancaster Apr. 10, 1903. / Married Elizabeth Michael in 1841 / of Lancaster, Pa - daughter of John / & Elizabeth Dietrich Michael. Removed to Lancaster in 1843 Sept. / on account of "homesickness" of Mrs. / Howell where he resided until his / death 4-1-03. They had five children.
