Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not writing on schedule but while they are in the country the regular schedule will not work since the President leaves the While House on Friday for the weekend; he is arranging a Party for a sail on the Harriet Lane that he will have no time to write; he hopes the trip will include Annapolis so that he might bring is best friend Mr. Scharff, who has kept him from becoming too wild, to meet her and implores her to like him; General Ward is joining the group in hopes that Miss Saunders will also be there, but she will not be; mentions her cousin Margie, the Ingrahams, and her aunt; chatted with Miss Emily.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson happy to have received her last letter and praising her sweetness and beauty while modestly acknowledging his faults; lamenting the fact that he never had a sister (she died at age 2) brought on by the visit of the Ingrahams; the atmosphere of Lake George must be felt in person, and implores her to use the pronoun “our” instead of “your” when referring to the place; that his steamboat would be right at home here; and lamenting that none of his own family has written. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson saying he is back to normal and at work again; hopes the season will start soon because it will be his last in Washington; will cherish the fever blister he got while visiting her; James Buchanan returned from Wheatland with Bob Magraw, who will remain for a few days; saw the two Macalasters; saw Captain Ingraham for a few minutes; and looks for her next welcome letter. Envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Washington, D.C., [1858].

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson saying he delayed going to Captain Ingraham’s to await her letter, but it did not come; the delay in the mails resulting an missed an event at Miss McKim’s; he is happy that she is surrounded by friends; offering advice in getting over a “little affair” which will disappear if they love each other; Mr. Scharff was married at noon and James Buchanan Henry is very happy for his dear friend; will go to the farewell reception of the Napiers and later to a ball given by Mrs. Brown; sends regards to Miss Margie and apologizes for not receiving her invitation on time; and Dr. Dau. Envelope with no stamp and no postmark addressed to Miss Nicholson, Care of John L McKim, Esq., Baltimore. Washington, D.C.
