Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing sorrow that she and her husband have contracted bad colds; chastising her for wishing she had a double house, advising her to “Be content with your lot” and she has “abundant reason to be so”; advising against inserting Mr. Schell’s “likeness” into the locket; the domestic Ellen’s illness has affected her mind and made Thomas “miserable and disconsolate”; George is leaving and “another colored man will take his place”; Buchanan will not go to New York because he feels unwell and cannot leave until “the girls” do, commenting that they are now sleighing with Octavius and Miss Griffith; willing to sell a house to Mrs. James Norris for $15,000 but Mrs. Lane could have it for $13,000; regretting he has not heard from the Nevins lately; gleefully announcing that Miss Annie will launch into the “Apostolic succession when Dr. Spark’s book arrives”; complaining that Mr. Capen writes far too many letters and that he answers only a few of them; advising Mr. Johnston to go ahead with his own book because Buchanan is too old to be any use; and giving his love to Emily and Bessy. With envelope addressed to 79 Monument Street, Baltimore.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr indicating he could not find the copy of the agreement sent to Mrs. Johnston which she returned unsigned; supposing that the Johnstons are the only ones required to make depositions on Saturday; reporting that Mr. Preston brought letters from Mr. Capen, G. S. Hillard, Judge Payne, and Colonel Greene supporting his bid to become James Buchanan’s biographer; noting that another possible candidate for biographer is H. B. Dawson, editor of the New York Historical Magazine, who has written several articles favorable to James Buchanan, and asking for news of what the Johnstons swear to at the deposition. 327, 329 &331 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.

Letter to Henry E. Johnston from H. B. Swarr updating the search for a biographer of James Buchanan since Mr. Reed was unable to do it, noting that among numerous interviews their hopes for Mr. Gillett (endorsed by Mr. Capen and Mr. Schell) were disappointed by his lack of literary qualifications; and noting that the terms of James Buchanan’s will require the executors to control the funds for the biography.
