James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 3 James Buchanan Henry
Title
Letter from T (a military officer) to J. B. Henry
Description
Letter from T (a military officer) to J. B. Henry detailing his medical problems including malaria and pending operations from war wounds; hopes that the present doctor is better than that of the Governor of Barataria (either a mythical island in Don Quixote or a place in Louisiana) recounts several stories of his war years including being defrauded by an accountant to obtain a commission in the army, a gambler and drinker who finally commits suicide, and a fraudulent telegram sent to President Lincoln asking for General McClellan to be replaced; attacks all Jews and accuses President Theodore Roosevelt and Secretary of War Taft of being Jews in the ways they handle their offices: Roosevelt for wasting public money on the Panama Canal and Taft for doing nothing; and prefers Foracker (former Republican governor of Ohio and a member of Congress). Invitation; no envelope. San Antonio, TX. 903 N. Flores St., San Antonio, [TX]. [After 7 September 1907].

Letter from Monsieur Ludovic LeChaut to Thaddeus Stevens
Description
Letter from Monsieur Ludovic LeChaut to Thaddeus Stevens stating that he had devised plans and inventions to aid the Union Navy during the Civil War and that he read in the newspaper that an admiral used one of his ideas to break through a rebel stronghold. He wrote to President Lincoln, but does not know if the letter was received by him. He did not like President Johnson, a Southern Democrat, and chose to write to Stevens due to his Republican ways and his loyalty to democracy. Le Havre, France. With envelope.
