This collection contains letters written to U.S. Army Private
George L. Caley during his service in World War II. The correspondence is from his parents and siblings in Philadelphia, aunts and uncles and friends in Columbia, Lancaster County, and friends from Millersville University. Many of his friends are also in the service and write to him of their experiences. The letters contain family and local news, as well as news of friends and family in the service.
This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to one of his daughters. From Waterford, Virginia. Letter expresses his pleasure at learning that Lillie has recovered from her illness, his disappointment at not being able to visit home, and provides some details of life in the camp. Text includes a description of the location of the town of Waterford, noting that the inhabitants are Quaker and friendly. Welsh expresses his disappointment in not hearing more from his family, but writes of missing his family very much.

Description
Handwritten letter to Thomas Welsh from his daughter, Alice. From Columbia. Letter mentions various activities by various family members, including visits by friends of her mother, an upcoming trip by her mother (with Lillie) to the country with friends, and a previous trip her mother and Effie took to Harrisburg where a train accident delayed their return. Alice mentions the death of Mr. Derick, the weather, an upcoming music lesson and expresses some concern over not hearing replies to previous letters by her and others. She concludes her letter by sending love from all.

Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. From Camp of 45th Regt. Penna. Vols. Letter discusses new leave rule put in place by General Hooker to allow more officers and soldiers to visit home and that it may be some time until he can leave since he is in command of the 3rd Brigade. Welsh reports that all are doing well in camp, but notes that a number of men have deserted. Asks family to write and sends love and kisses to all.
