He learned that Governor Hutchinson wrote letters to a private secretary before he became governor, not to the Home Secretary while governor. Letter from James Buchanan to Henry E. Johnston noting that he had a pleasant visit to brother Edward’s family and is happy that mother and son are doing well; reporting of seeing Mr. Macalester (a member of the Union League and a “violent” Republican, though he gave a dinner for Mr. Peabody along with John W. Forney in attendance, and happy that even though Macalester voted for Geary that his son voted for Clymer, and a note about Lily and Harriet; repeating the rumor that Harriet Buchanan and Bob Rogers will be married; having not seen the Nevins; begging off from visiting during the winter but hopes to come in warmer weather; asking that Harriet be informed of all the good wishes from her friends; and that Judge Cadwalder gave him a dinner with General Meade in attendance. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.
