Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that they are in their new home; confessing that he kept her letter from New York a secret to prevent her being perceived as a “restless gadabout”; regretting the leaving of Miss Magaw even though she left Jessie behind; stating that she will visit Miss Ramsay, daughter of the general; expressing his pleasure that the Misses Pleasonton are currently visiting; expressing pleasure that the new servants are “quite satisfactory”; noting that he will learn little of the party that the Misses Nauman gave because Misses Blanche and Patty did not attend; stating that his visit to Mrs. Lane was very gracious and that the boys are beginning to write compositions, which he has offered to correct though he suspects they will not bring them to him; noting that the Brintons leave for New York and Boston before going to Europe; giving Mr. Johnston his assessment of John P. Reed of Bedford, F. M. Kimmell of Chambersburg, and Mr. Webb; and commenting on the fee for a report on the lands to be divided among the six people involved. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston rejoicing that “his namesake” has been baptized; noting that Mrs. Shunk did accompany her husband to Washington as Mary Black supposed; expressing happiness that “little Frank Scroder has recovered; conjecturing on the whereabouts of Miss Snyder, probably with her sister Mrs. Elsegood; elated that Henrietta has gone to Baltimore and might find a beau; repeating the gossip from Blanche Nevin that Harriet Lane had married Octavius Norris of Baltimore; thanking her for the cigars and cheese even though he did not like them, and the stockings, which he did, praying that she will “send me no more cheese”; and hoping his new-found relationship with Mrs. Lane will continue. With envelope addressed to Mrs. Harriet E. Johnston at 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland. 19 January 186[7].

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness at the family’s impending visit but questions the wisdom of exposing baby to the weather; admitting the most extreme pain which has all but incapacitated him; adding to the already shortages of help, he now has only one horse; welcoming the visit of Annie Buchanan; Mrs. Lane and Blanche Nevin have been most attentive; and lamenting that both “Oxford patients” are better but that Willie might not recover.
