Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson describing his departure from Staten Island to the Battery of Manhattan to board a ship to Bermuda; describes in detail the rough voyage through the Gulf Stream; describes his first view of the island and then a lengthy description of the horticulture and other aspects of the island; among his acquaintances along the way were Frank, who saw him off; a German gentleman who almost missed the boat; Mr. Murphy; the Outerbridges; Mr. O and his uncle Harvey, Ellie, Miss Lollie O., Mrs. Butterfield, Mrs. Bullafus and Miss Lotte and Mrs. Beille; and Aunt Sidney. Some fading throughout. Envelope with address of Hamilton Hotel, Jno. W. Dodge & Harnett, Bermuda back flap detached, no stamp, with Hamilton postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Description
Letter from Louisa Anderson Henry to J. B. Henry expressing sorrow over Mrs. Magruder’s accident; Louisa is gaining strength and the baby [William] is doing well; Mrs. Pennelt paid a visit; Elizabeth is not good at finding a nurse because she sent a 19-year-old girl from another country who had been with Mrs. Outerbridge; doesn’t want to hire a woman who will leave after a brief time; asks him to find a woman in Annapolis and she wouldn’t mind “a nice looking light-colored woman” but not “a great big black woman.” Envelope edged in black with postmark addressed to James Buchanan Henry, Esq. Hotel Maryland, Annapolis, Maryland extremely faded. Stapleton. [11/12/1873] Date from envelope, context and perpetual calendar.
