Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing joy that she and her son are doing well; asking her to purchase a Christmas gift of jewelry for Becky Shunk; commenting on the coming holidays when Harriet Buchanan’s “lover” will be home from his divinity studies, but that she might find a more suitable match in Baltimore unless she is engaged; really upset at the snubbing of Mrs. Lane and even his interest in her children has “vanished in a great degree”; and saying he had an agreeable visit to brother Edward’s family, Lois has regained her health, and he was not dissatisfied with the abandonment of Henrietta by Cecil. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston rejoicing that “his namesake” has been baptized; noting that Mrs. Shunk did accompany her husband to Washington as Mary Black supposed; expressing happiness that “little Frank Scroder has recovered; conjecturing on the whereabouts of Miss Snyder, probably with her sister Mrs. Elsegood; elated that Henrietta has gone to Baltimore and might find a beau; repeating the gossip from Blanche Nevin that Harriet Lane had married Octavius Norris of Baltimore; thanking her for the cigars and cheese even though he did not like them, and the stockings, which he did, praying that she will “send me no more cheese”; and hoping his new-found relationship with Mrs. Lane will continue. With envelope addressed to Mrs. Harriet E. Johnston at 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland. 19 January 186[7].

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston reporting the departure of Mrs. Shunk, of whom he thinks very highly, to visit relations in Maryland and Washington; saying that Thomas and Rosana are leaving, and he is “not sorry for it”; saying he has invited Annie to come and bring Alice; reporting the visit of Robert Nevin and that Wilberforce is still in town perhaps because of his leaving Forney’s firm; hoping the baby is well and looking forward to a visit; reporting the illness of Governor Porter; saying that Mrs. Lane told him Mrs. George W. Franklin was the mother of a son; unselfishly reporting that “fair” Judith is marrying Mr. Richard Culling, though his income is not much; hoping Mr. Shull will call; and saying that Miss Hetty received her letter. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.
