Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that she can take “little Buck” for a ride but unhappy that he could not serve as godfather and gives reasons for not being a sponsor; offering advice on child raising; reporting that “Bob” and Cecil are home for the holidays; admonished the staff of The Intelligencer to send her only one copy, not three, mentioning the “war” between the Democratic and the Republican papers; noting that recent guests included Miss Snyder, Rebekah, Jane, but Mrs. Nevin scalded her foot, Pattee sprained an ankle, and Blanche is bright as ever; and asking, although he doesn’t smoke much, for Mr. Johnston to send him a box of cigars. Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston rejoicing that “his namesake” has been baptized; noting that Mrs. Shunk did accompany her husband to Washington as Mary Black supposed; expressing happiness that “little Frank Scroder has recovered; conjecturing on the whereabouts of Miss Snyder, probably with her sister Mrs. Elsegood; elated that Henrietta has gone to Baltimore and might find a beau; repeating the gossip from Blanche Nevin that Harriet Lane had married Octavius Norris of Baltimore; thanking her for the cigars and cheese even though he did not like them, and the stockings, which he did, praying that she will “send me no more cheese”; and hoping his new-found relationship with Mrs. Lane will continue. With envelope addressed to Mrs. Harriet E. Johnston at 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland. 19 January 186[7].
