Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office. Buchanan’s farm contains the superfluous word “on” and asking to have Mr. Smith correct it; asking him as a personal favor to contact Mr. Dripps regarding a late mortgage payment; noting that nothing has been received from Mr. Wise yet, except Mr. Monaghan has received $100 from him; worrying that Mr. Hiester may accept delays from Judge Black regarding the lawsuit, and that until the issue is settled they may as well not bother to hire a biographer because they could not furnish him with any papers other than those already in their possession; and noting that he has spoken to Mr. Cassatt again concerning Charles.
