Note: Paul Rich is most likely her cousin, son of Thomas Welsh's sister Catherine; Amos Mullen served with Thomas Welsh as 3rd Sergeant in the 2nd Pa. Reg., Co. F.; Ann, Maggie, and Jim are cousins, children of Thomas Welsh's sister, Mary. Mr. Appold is a business associate, helping to take care of Thomas Welsh's business affairs while he is gone.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from Thomas Welsh to Effie Welsh (daughter)
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Effie. From Camp. Letter discusses the exchange of correspondence between various family members and encourages Effie to write more often. Answers Effie's request for a photograph for Miss Jones' Album. Letter describes the weather and reports that all are doing well in camp. Sends love and kisses to all, including Effie's "little friends and playmates. Note: Envelope and the letter are not matched; the envelope goes with an earlier letter from Port Royal, May 19, 1862.
