Description
Two printed invitations. First is an invitation for Thomas Welsh to attend a Benefit Ball in Marietta, Lancaster County on January 12, 1848; name of "Mr. Thomas Welch" [sic] handwritten on invitation. Second is an invitation for Miss Nancy Young to attend a Cotillion Party hosted by John Hiestand in York, on December 29, 1848. Both invitations include names of committee members and/or managers. There is a watermark at the bottom of the benefit ball invitation, page 3 "Southwark Co."

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Four invitations to Thomas Welsh to attend social engagements
Description
Four handwritten invitations.
First is an invitation with raised decorative border from Mrs. Jane Strickler for Thomas Welsh to attend a Friday evening event at Fairview Farm, November 17, 1848.
Second is an invitation from G. G. Claiborne for Lieutenant Welsh to enjoy afternoon coffee on August 21, no year; embossed watermark with crown and "LONDON" upper left corner.
Third is an invitation from Mr. and Mrs. Felix to Thomas Welsh to visit their home on Friday evening, March 16, 1849.
Fourth is an invitation with raised decorative border for Thomas Welsh to attend a pleasure excursion on Monday, May 28, 1849 at the Washington, Hotel. Note: May reference the Washington Hotel, Wrightsville, Pa.

Two handwritten invitations to attend an evening social engagement at Cherry Street hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson on May 23, 1849. Invitation to Thomas Welsh includes time of 8:00 PM. Both invitations have a raised decorative border and scalloped edge along top, bottom, and left sides. Note: May 23, 1849 was a Wednesday.
