Watercolor on paper of the Hardwicke mansion; beige coloring with gray/white roof and columns, green shutters on windows. The main section of the house has a grand elliptical facade with four monumental columns. The section adjacent to this has arched windows. The house continues in several smaller sections to the viewer's right; one of these sections is a greenhouse. The surrounding area is filled with grass and trees. NOT FOUND IN BOX 0066, July 2023
The painting has a caption at the bottom which reads '"HARDWICKE" NEAR LANCASTER PA'. The painting is dated "Nov. 1881" in the lower right corner.
Hardwicke was the country seat of the attorney and judge Charles Smith who married Jasper Yeates' daughter; it was built east of Lancaster, overlooking the Conestoga River, in about 1804. It may have been designed by Stephen Hills, who also designed the Old Capital Building in Harrisburg. John J. Snyder states the house was "the most sophisticated and most elegant Federal mansion in Lancaster County." He says the Smiths moved to Baltimore in the 1820s, after which a son of ironmaster Robert Coleman owned the building.
Hardwicke later became the summer home of the Cassatt family where artist Mary Cassatt was born (1844). Apparently a Colonel Wiley owned it when the railroad demolished it in Nov. 1881.

Watercolor on paper, showing a building called the Telescope House or the Steamboat House. It has a two-story octagonal center section, and two one-story wings; the center section has a cupola (also octagonal). The building has a frame construction, and is colored brown with ivory-white trim. A high fence extends across the front of the building. Various trees are visible behind the building. NOT FOUND IN BOX 0066, July 2023
The caption at the bottom reads "THE TELESCOPE HOUSE,--BUILT BY JOHN F. REMLEY. 1841-8/COLUMBIA AVN. & MARIETTA PIKE." The lower right corner has the date of the painting, "1881"
The building stood approximately where W. King and W. Orange Streets meet. The name "Telescope House" comes from the fact that the house used to have an observatory until the late 1800s, when the building was renovated and additional floors were added (prior to this painting).

There are numerous gray marks over the surface of the painting, and some areas of paint are faded. The reverse has glue stains on the corners, where the painting was apparently attached to a previous backing.
The piece is currently float-mounted in hinged window matting.

Miniature watercolor portrait of Simon Cameron, turned in profile to his right, withing a painted oval, all on rectangular buff-colored paper. Cameron is painted at about age 60, in profile with a resolute expression on his face. He is wearing formal attire: a dark black-collared coat with a white, high collar protruding at his neck and a suggestion of a cravat of jabot at his neck. The background is shaded in tones of brown and the artist's signature in printed in black at the bottom of Cameron's coat, "E. Hergesheimer." Portrait must certainly have been done posthumously as Hergesheimer would have been only 16 years of age when Cameron died. (Photos and more information in file.) Written by Wendell Zercher.

Possession of the portrait by the Slaymaker family is probably due to the intermarriage of the Slaymaker and Cameron families. Cameron's niece (Jane Elizabeth Cameron Redsecker) married Colonel S.C. Slaymaker (1828-1894) on May 28, 1862. Then descent to widow of S.R. Slaymaker II.
Generally in good condition and stable. Acid burned around perimeter where in contact with frame and window mat; heavily soiled front and back; dark stains at upper corners where previously hinged; 3 or 4 areas around perimeter where paper has been scraped, abraded, dented and even punctured. Edges of paper have been unevenly cut. Treated at Lancaster Galleries with de-acidifying spray and reframed.

Paining shows the Roman Catholic church painted from the street. Three passersby dressed in the style of 1800-1850, pass in front of the stone wall surrounding the church property. Fencing atop wall encircles the church building and adjoining cemetery. Large tall trees from a backdrop to church.
Painting is unsigned.
This is one of at least three very similar paintings. The other two are found in Gerry Lestz's Artists' Album/Lancaster County and another in Carl Drepperd's American Pioneer Arts and Artists. Both Drepperd and Lestz have captions stating the paintings date from about 1835. Likely theses paintings were executed by a number of students or the copied the work of the original artist.
This is similar to version 1.45.84 (loan by Mrs. R. Harcourt Darmstaetter).

Watercolor mounted on heavy paper backing; margins of backing have moisture stain at bottom right and insect damages across top and right. All paper darkened overall from age and acid, and painting has some foxing across surface.
Watercolor,Bringing Home Christmas, "shows a winter scene with many trees and fences. The main subject is a man in a horse-drawn sleight with a Christmas tree following a dog onto a covered bridge. A stream runs through the middle of the scene and under the bridge. Several house appear in the background as well as a man cutting down a tree in the upper left and deer in the upper right.. Taped to back, 3 newspaper articles: 1) "Local Artist Gains Fame...at 83" , 9/18/1973; 2) "$3,100 for a Hattie Brunner" no date; 3) "Hattie Bruner, Antique Dealer, Artist Dies," 8/2/1982. Hattie was 92 years old when she died.

Water color portrait of a young man on wove paper. The subject depicted in full-length profile, facing to the viewer's left, with right foot in front of left. He has short black hair and is wearing a dark blue coat, white shirt with high collar, blue and white checked vest, dark gray pants and black boots. He is holding a top hat upside-down in his right hand.
The background is dominated by a blue sky with a few clouds, an orange or light brown horizon, blue-green hills and bushes (probably faded green) and brown ground.
According to the sellers, the subject is one of the Reitz (or Ritz) brothers. Catherine Reitz was the great-great grandmother of the seller, Guiles Erisman Costolo. For more info on the provenance see the file.
Artist Jacob Maentel (1763-1863) was an important itinerant portrait painter in watercolor who worked extensively in northwest Lancaster County during the first quarter of the 19th century.
Some horizontal buckling on left side, vertical buckling along top edge, but otherwise in good condition.
Conservation treatment and matting done in Feb. 1989 by CCAHA in Phila. Mat must have later been removed, so this piece was matted and framed by conservator Brian Howard in 1996.
"Spring Flood" oil painting on canvas is attributed to Lloyd Mifflin. Elaborate gold frame.
Painting is a landscape done in browns, greens, light yellow and light blue in loose brush strokes. Consists of two farmhouses on either side of a flooded lane. In the center of the lane is a man riding a house with his back to the viewer. He is leading another horse at his right.
Frame is period but not original. Plaque at bottom of frame, applies by donor reads: :SPRING FLOOD/LLOYD MIFFLIN."
Painting in good condition with some cracking at upper left corner and light soiling overall. Frame is heavily soiled with small crack, scratches and chips overall. Paint on frame is worn in various places.
Watercolor of Eli K. Mylin farm, mounted in large gilt frame.
Painting is done on a rectangular, heavy sheet of sepia-brown paper with textured surface. Executed in greens, brown, red and white. Immediate foreground shows a railroad stretching from left to right, bordered by wooden fencing. Fields in near foreground lead up to a farmstead in midrange consisting of a stone house at far right encircled by a white picket fence, a large white barn at far left, and various outbuildings located between them. Distant fields rise slightly to form rolling hills with trees and fencing at horizon. Sketchy white clouds are arranged across the sky.
The farm is located directly south of Willow Street, Pequea Twp., Lancaster County and belonged to donor's great-grandfather. Her grandmother, Lillie V. Stehman, grew up there before marrying Isaiah D. Stehman and moving to Mount Joy.
The 1864 Atlas shows E.K. Mylin residing in the extreme southeast corner of Pequea Twp. The 1899 Atlas shows two farms in close proximity, both owned by E. K. Mylin.
Painted in 1913, probably from a photo post card (with a May 1906 postmark) that shows this exact scene.

Overall good condition. Minor buckling across surface with vertical streaks of dark soil across both painting and backing paper. Bother papers have suffered some fading. Frame has much of gliding intact on interior surfaces although worn and soiled but exterior surfaces of frame have been painted over to hid chips and losses. Reverse side of frame has torn and soiled brown paper backing covering two large wood back boards.
Watercolor of Lancaster County farm, title "FAIRVIEW FARM/ HOME OF AMOS BOWMAN" at bottom. Done on paper pasted down on acidic board (on reverse is printed: "WINSOR & NEWTON'S...38, RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON, ENGLAND." Paining is done over a pencil sketch, lines still visible. Artist employed a muted palette with a predominant use of gray.
Within a line border is a stone farmhouse surrounded by tall trees, barn and other outbuildings. Five people are busy working on the property. Road passes in front of farm and is bordered by two white picket fences. An uncovered Conestoga wagon and a horse and buggy are passing on the road. In the forground is an open pasture with grazing cows.
Amos Bowman was born in Providence Twp, Sept. 25, 1849. His father was a Reformed Menno. minister & bishop, but Amos became a farmer and eventually bought his present 60-acre W. Lampeter farm from Abraham Herr in 1868. He married Barbara Weaver, also a child of a Ref. Menno. minister (Joseph Weaver). The had no children and were active in the Reformed Mennonite Church. Amos was also active in the affairs of the twp., but since 1870 has been retire from both public affairs and farming. (p. 829 of Biog. Annals)

A monogram "JCR" is painted by artist at bottom right. Attributed to Julius R. Capel Rowley, artist & illustrator, who painted similar watercolors of homesteads for many individuals who were subjects of the 1903 Biog. Annals of Lanc. Co. Interestingly, Amos Bowman did not pay to have his farm included in the publication like so many other. Artist resided at 115 N. Lime St. in 1903 (City Directory). Rowley was the son of Rev. Julius Henry Rowley, M.A., rector of Walsby, near Market Rasen, England
Oil on canvas portrait of Rev. Hans Herr (1639-1725), attributed to Baron Leon von Ossko, unframed.
Painting depicts elderly gentleman with nearly shoulder-length hair and long beard, wearing a plain brown coat with two buttons showing at front; plain dark background. Up-cast eyes and unsmiling face denote a properly pietistic expression for this patriarch and pastor of the first group of Mennonites to settle in Lancaster County in 1710. At upper right hand corner in block letters is painted "HANS HERR."
Canvas is attached with tack to sides of a mitered stretcher. The miters are fitted at back with a cast iron device embossed with two patent dates of 1883 and 1885.
The book Genealogical Record of Rev. Hans Herr & His Lineal Descendants depicts a copy of this painting, noting that it was painted by John Funk. Von Ossko reportedly produced a number of these paintings for the Herr descendants, apparently copying the original Funk portrait. The artist married a descendant of Hans Herr, Ella Louisa Breneman, in 1884. They lived in Lancaster City. Marrying into the Herr clan likely sparked the idea for generating copies of the patriarch on canvas.

The Farmers (Mr. and Mrs. C. Richard Farmer) say they obtained painting from an unknown source. They gave it to their son years ago, but he never used it.
This painting was after the original by John Funk of Strasburg.
Puncture of 1/2" x 1/2" to right of sitter's left eye; near complete puncture at bottom, 7" in from right corner, with pigment loss. A ft-long scratch begins at right of sitter's curl and extends obliquely to lower right corner. Some pigment loss at edges; deterioration of canvas and tacks failing along left edge. Soiled overall. A small piece of paper is affixed at back to repair the major puncture. Recent tacks added to secure canvas at sides.
