Series 1, Register of enslaved women and their children who were born after 1780, is a compilation of papers filed by holders of enslaved persons that show date; name and place of residence of slaveholder; name of mother (usually an enslaved person) and child; date of birth; sex of child; age when the child will be freed; official seal and signatures; and date when filed.

This collection contains papers and local government records related to Black history in Lancaster County, including an index to Lancaster County's register of enslaved persons, Mayor's Register of Coloured Persons or Negro Entry Book, and a biographical account of Rev. James William Charles Pennington. There are official records for enslaved persons and their children in Lancaster County, as well as freemen within Lancaster City. The collection also contains a manumission paper from the state of Virginia, a certificate for free persons of color, and letters from anit-slavery societies.

Series 1 consists of the "Slave Registers," official county records registering enslaved women and their children after 1780.
Series 2 contains the "Mayor's Register of Coloured Persons," a manumission paper, correspondence, and other records.

This collection contains historical information about the property of Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith in Lancaster.
Admin/Biographical History
Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868) owned property at 45-47 South Queen Street, built c. 1820. Lydia Hamilton Smith owned adjacent property at 23 East Vine Street, Lancaster.

Servants bell used by Thaddeus Stevens. Has thin, disk-shaped stone base with bell mounted above, encircled by a decorative housing comprised of three Mother of Pear shells, floral and vining grapes of copper, and external copper clapper suspended from an arching copper wire. Stone base supports a brass pierced gallery encircling the bell.
Walking cane used by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens late in life. Made of a tree branch with irregularities and smoothed knots; unusual wood with pronounced grain. Grip end curves into a burled knob. Glossy finish.
Silver cap on tip of grip is engraved: "This cane / was the property / of Hon. Thaddeus Stevens / during his latter days. / Presented to H.A. Zug, 1868." Bottom end wrapped with a 1.25" wide brass collar and an iron tip.
Provenance
Zug's relationship to Stevens is unknown. Henry A. Zug (22 Aug 1825 - 22 Apr 1890) married Fannie Hershey (5 Jul 1819 - ??) on 19 Nov 1844. Resided in Lancaster City.
In 1871 Henry Zug was a pharmaceutist at 44 E. Chestnut.
In 1873-74 Zug was a custom house inspector at 41 W. Orange St.
1880 Census says Zug was a "dealer in produce".
Death ceritificate of 1890 notes occupation as "druggist supplies".
His daughter, donor Lola Zug (9 Dec 1861 - 28 Jul 1952), was unmarried and a teacher in city.
Fancy painted rocking windsor chair. Black with faded colored ornament. Conserved in the mid-20th century. Inscription on the bottom of seat links the chair to Thaddeus Stevens's Caledonia Furnace.
Four items on chains all attached to a metal ring (1 inch diameter):
A- 3 plain plastic notecards that pivot from a grommet with "sterling" silver cover monogrammed "G.M.F." On a 3.5-inch chain that's attached to a larger ring.
B- coin holder with "GMF" monogram on side. Maker's mark on bottom and "925 Fine Sterling."
C- pencil marked "Sterling" at top
D.(see also 2002.154.60) circular container: Maker's mark with "926 Fine Sterling." A round empty container (compact-like) with hinged top. "G.M.F" inscribed on lid.
