James Buchanan Family Papers
Description
James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 8 Papers of Others (Not Part of the Family), Series 3 contains ephemera, including invitations, broadsides, calling cards, and poems. There are several tickets to various democratic conventions and rallies, calling cards, business cards, invitations to homes as well as to parties and balls, two poems, a World War I speech and a railroad scrip ticket book. The majority of the tickets in this series are for political conventions during the 1860s and 1870s from Baltimore, New York, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, as well as a few with no date or location. Invitations range from business sized cards requesting the recipient's company to printed cards for a ball and New Year's Eve Gala.
Admin/Biographical History
The majority of the items in this series are missing context and relationship with the other items in the collection. There is no clear connection with the items and who they belonged to or how they ended up in the collection. There are a few items that can be examined further, such as a ticket to the Eulogy on John Sergeant by Hon. William M. Meredith at the Musical Fund Hall on April 22, 1853. This eulogy was published as Eulogium on the Character and Services of the Late John Sergeant. The convention ticket in folder 1 labeled "L. Vallandingham" may refer to Louise Vallandingham the wife of Clement Vallandingham who was a states' rights advocate and an outspoken opponent to Abraham Lincoln.

General Thomas Welsh Family Papers
Description
Business card identifying Thomas Welsh as Justice of the Peace and as agent for the Commonwealth Fire Insurance Company and the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. Card can be dated to between the latter half of 1859 (when he became a Penn Mutual agent) and the first half of 1860 (when he appears to have stopped selling for Commonwealth). As Justice of the Peace, he lists his services as "Collections made and returns promptly remitted. Deeds, Bonds, Mortgages, &c. carefully prepared." Illegible writing (names) on back of card.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.

Summary
This collection contains both family and business correspondence for the Griel family, primarily Mr. Harvey M. Griel of Lancaster. Family correspondence include letters, invitations, announcements, and ephemera. These examples provide insightful clues about a late 19th century family in Lancaster city. The private documents of the family are primarily addressed to Harvey and Katie, with other family member occasionally included as well. The business transactions and correspondence concern a wheel manufacturing and a polishing tool supply business that Harvey operated in Lancaster city, dating from 1890 and 1891. Business orders, receipts, billheads, cancelled checks, and a personal business card, are some of the business items that are a part of this collection. The business portion of this collection provides information about a 19th century trade that once flourished in Lancaster city.

Summary
This collection contains papers from individuals who are not members of the Buchanan Family. There are four series, Correspondence, Financial and Legal Documents, Ephemera and News Papers. This Finding Aid is a general aid for Part 8 of this collection. Each of the Series in this part also has a separate finding aid with detailed scope and content notes and history and biographical information if applicable. The series and items in this part all originate from non-family members of James Buchanan. They may be business acquaintances, distant relatives and friends or neighbors and visitors to Wheatland. Items date from the 1770's through1925, with the earliest items pertaining to promissory notes, receipts of payment and ledgers. The bulk of the items in the 1800's consist of correspondence and ephemera. Most of the items either originate from or are related to the Lancaster County region, however there are many items from Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C.
