Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson saying he will not write much but will “save up” things to talk about when he sees her tomorrow; attended another horrid dinner, but tonight is quiet; he will not be going to Florida for the wedding of Mr. Scharff since they will come directly to Washington after their wedding; complains the mud in Washington while there is the snow in Annapolis and elsewhere; he and her father will travel together. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson bemoaning his having to attend dull and very late parties, including that of Mrs. Tompson’s, where the room was so hot a man fainted; her uncle Dan was flirting with Miss Kennedy; has tickets to a fancy affair; saw her father and Mr. Voorhees; teased Miss Felton about West Point, but Miss Marian Ramsey was belle of the evening; and hopes to see her on Saturday. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing dismay that she is sick from her mother’s last letter; she was well enough to add a postscript to the letter; did not enjoy the rather large reception while thinking of her; required to take the “ladies” to a to Governor Floyd’s reception and other one tomorrow though he is not happy in “this sort of miserable sort of life I am compelled by his position to lead”; assures her that she will make a speedy recovery as a result of her mothers’ nursing. Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson detailing his delay in getting there; got Dody shoes, and tried to visit Cousin Lodi, Fanny Smith, and Fanny Randall; saw Miss Carver and saw her portrait painted by Indigiani; mentions cousins Alice and Anne, Mr. Crawford, and Mrs. Robinette and nieces; goes from Lancaster and Greensburg before returning to Annapolis; and sends best wishes to her parents. Envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan, care of Dr. Wm. C. Anderson, Stapleton. Oxford, Pa., Sunday night [15 June].

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson commenting on her aunt’s letter stating that both mother and child are doing well; sent a letter to a friend enclosing a photograph; the German of Parker was successful and Jessie stayed until late; visited Miss McKenzie and likes her very much; shot a rabbit and partridge; sending her a paper from Orvis in Jacksonville who published part of James Buchanan Henry’s letter; and the economy is so poor that he will not fill any orders but hopes next year will be better. Envelope with postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Care Dr. W. C. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Both letter and envelope heavily water damaged rendering parts unreadable. Annapolis, Maryland, [1 November after 1872].

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson discussing his trying to close down the business; had a letter from Mr. Parker; was sorry to hear of Dody’s music but happy that he is having a good time; the Murray Chestons visited; spoke to Commander Schley; asked Bridgett to let Elizabeth, Dody’s old nurse, know that he was in New York; weather is warm and dry; and Commander Parker and wife are visiting. Annapolis, Maryland, [after 1 November 1872].
