Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old. [https://www.lancasterhistory.org/about-wheatland, accessed 10/24/2019]

Summary
This collection contains original documents, genealogy, magazines, newspapers, and photographs relating to the Coleman and allied families and the history of Elizabeth Furnace/Farms. The original items include deeds, patents, warrants for survey, receipts, diaries, account books, correspondence, inventories, land drafts, and various legal papers. The collection is divided into 5 series based on the storage locations of the original items.
SERIES 1 contains a variety of documents ranging in date from 1759 to 1904. The earliest documents are property records including deeds, patents, and requests and orders for surveys of Henry William Stiegel and Robert Coleman for land in northern Lancaster County and what is now southeastern Lebanon County. Other types of legal documents include agreements, bonds, leases, and slave records. Robert Colemans correspondence primarily regards business issues. There are also business and personal papers of the Grubb family, the Old family, B. Dawson Coleman, James Coleman, Harriet Coleman, George August Dawson, Anna Peace, the Robertson family, and George Dawson Coleman. Most notable is the correspondence with Simon Cameron and President and Mrs. Grant.
SERIES 2 contains eighteenth century patents, warrants for survey, and receipts for surveys for land in northern Lancaster County and what is now southeastern Lebanon County. The parties involved in these transactions were Lesher, Young, Hoffman, Shuitz, Huber, Moots, Weisner, Housholder, Palmer, Stiegel, Barr, Stedman, Grubb, Stuckey, and Baughman. Photographs of Mrs. George Dawson Coleman and family, and Werner G. Haug were also in the box.
SERIES 3 begins with a series of correspondence between President Grant and family and G. Dawson Coleman and family. The remaining business and personal papers are related to the Dawson family, Cornwall Furnace, Lebanon Iron Works, the Civil War, James Buchanan and Anne Coleman, the Coleman estate, Deborah Brown and William Brown, and the Cornwall mines.
SERIES 4 contains Debbie Brown Colemans cookbook and an account book of Robert Coleman.
SERIES 5a contains property records including deeds, bills of sale, receipts, agreements, releases, land drafts, and Orphans Court documents for land in Lancaster County and Lebanon County.
SERIES 5b contains deeds and other property records of George Hetzler, the Colemans, the Fahnestocks, and others.
SERIES 5c contains deeds and other property records of Henry William Stiegel and Robert Coleman for Elizabeth Furnace.
SERIES 5d contains requests and warrants for survey, agreements, deeds, land drafts, receipts, bills of sale, other legal documents, and personal papers for Robert Coleman and his descendants. The insurance policies are for buildings owned by B. Dawson Coleman and Francis Gowen Coleman. There are a number of documents and letters dealing with the estates of family members, including inventories of furniture. Correspondence and newspaper articles in Boxes 2 and 3 concern the history of the Coleman family, their property and business.
