Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description
Hand-addressed envelope to Brigadier General Thomas Welsh, Louisville, Kentucky. On envelope letterhead, upper left corner: Headquarters, Pennsylvania Militia, Quartermaster's Department. "Official Business" in ink written under letterhead. Notation lower left corner: "If not there please forward to Gen. Welsh." Postmarked Harrisburg, Pa., June 3, 1863. Includes two 3-cent stamps, signifincant loss of stamp near upper right corner of envelope.

Costello listing interest owed James Buchanan; and one from W. J. S. Stahr listing interest owed James Buchanan.

Three from James Buchanan carry his signature and free franking, one has an intact seal; 2 others carry intact seals; 3 carry stamps; 2 are marked “paid”; 7 carry postmarks; and one has no markings.
