Patrons must make an appointment with the Director of Archival Services at least two weeks prior to their visit. Digital images and/or transcriptions may be available upon request, for use onsite. Original documents may only be used under the direct supervision of the Archives staff.
Summary
This collection contains papers from individuals who are not members of the Buchanan Family. There are four series, Correspondence, Financial and Legal Documents, Ephemera and News Papers. This Finding Aid is a general aid for Part 8 of this collection. Each of the Series in this part also has a separate finding aid with detailed scope and content notes and history and biographical information if applicable. The series and items in this part all originate from non-family members of James Buchanan. They may be business acquaintances, distant relatives and friends or neighbors and visitors to Wheatland. Items date from the 1770's through1925, with the earliest items pertaining to promissory notes, receipts of payment and ledgers. The bulk of the items in the 1800's consist of correspondence and ephemera. Most of the items either originate from or are related to the Lancaster County region, however there are many items from Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C.
