The Bicentennial of the First Settlement in Lancaster County, 1710-1910
Description
The scrapbook is composed of William Uhler Hensel's correspondence from 1910. These letters are responses to Hensel's invitation to the celebration of the 200th birthday of the first settlement in Lancaster County, near present-day Willow Street. The majority of the letters are handwritten. The book also contains programs describing the events of the celebration and an historical description of the first settlement in 1710.
Admin/Biographical History
William Uhler Hensel
William Uhler Hensel was born in Quarryville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on 3 December 1851. Hensel attended the local public school and a series of private academies before entering Franklin and Marshall College in 1866. Hensel was very active in the school including fraternities and clubs. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in 1870.
After graduation, Hensel pursued a career in law and studied under Judge Isaac Hiester and David G. Eshleman. In 1873, Hensel was admitted to the Lancaster Bar and established his own practice in Lancaster. While studying law, he became interest in journalism and later maintained a dual career in journalism and law. After opening his law firm, Hensel became the co-owner of the Lancaster Intelligencer and also became editor of the newspaper.
Hensel was active in politics and helped in the efforts of the Democratic Party in Lancaster County. He compiled many writings that aided campaigns such as biographies of the Democratic candidates. In 1891, he became the attorney general of Pennsylvania.
As one of the founding members of the Lancaster County Historical Society, he wrote many articles for the historical society's journal that depict the county's history. Hensel was active in the community by giving lectures and presenting information to societies and clubs throughout Lancaster County. He was also president of the Pennsylvania-German Society.
Hensel married Emily Flinn; they had one daughter named Elizabeth. He practiced law throughout his life and received honorary doctorates from Dickinson College in 1909 and Franklin and Marshall in 1912. Hensel died on 27 February 1915 from cirrhosis of the liver while on vacation in Georgia.
First Settlement in Lancaster County
Lancaster County was officially established in 1729 out of Chester County. The first settlement began in 1709 and was established by Swiss Mennonites in 1710 around the area of present-day Willow Street. Hans Herr was the bishop of the founding group. The Hans Herr House is now the oldest building in Lancaster County dating back to 1719. The original inhabitants of the area included the Susquehannocks (also known as the Conestogas), Shawnee, Gawanese, Delaware, and Nanticoke. Huguenots, Scots-Irish, English, Welsh, and Rhineland Germans settled in Lancaster County after the Swiss Mennonites.

Description
The subject of this scrapbook is Bangor Episcopal Church located in Churchtown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It contains information about the Bangor Church graveyard including some names, marker locations and epitaphs from the gravestones. Composed mostly of newspaper clippings, the scrapbook incorporates some handwritten notes to complement the newspaper articles. Within the book, there are several people mentioned associated with the church such as Robert E. Simpson, William F. Worner, Cyrus Jacobs and Hanson B. Jacobs.

Bangor Episcopal Church, Churchtown, Pennsylvania
Appropriately named "Old Bangor," this church is the oldest non-coastal church in America of Episcopalian denomination. The founding date is a disputed one with oral history dating back to 1722 and written history starting in 1728. With a predominantly Welsh congregation, Bangor Episcopal Church was given a grant and charter in 1730 from William Penn. The church's official charter was created on 1 March 1786, and the church still operates under this charter. The present stone building was completed in 1830. Bishop Ondernack performed the consecration of the present building in 1832. Bangor Churchyard contains 325 tombstones and many unmarked graves. The oldest tombstone is dated 6 July 1741 and is in memory of a young girl, who died at the age of three. There are tombstones in the graveyard from all the wars since the Revolutionary War until World War II. Bangor Church still stands and operates in Churchtown, Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Description
Corporate Lancaster encompasses a large variety of businesses throughout the county. Many of these businesses are power companies including electric, water and coal. Some of the major companies mentioned include Atglen Water Company, Susquehanna Canal Water and Power Company, Pennsylvania Water and Power Company, Lititz Water Works, Edison Electric Illuminating Company, and Holtwood Coal Company. These comprise the majority of the scrapbook, however, many retail, savings and insurance companies are also mentioned. Recognizable names are F. W. Woolworth and Company, City Savings and Trust, Lancaster Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Steinman Hardware Store, and the Hager Store. Information about taxes, population, censuses and stocks are featured in some of the newspaper clippings. Many modes of transportation were written about, such as trolley lines, railroads and canals. The materials available in this book include an account book, newspaper clippings, photographs, advertisements, and postcards.

Description
The Saint James Episcopal Church scrapbook is filled with articles discussing the antiques, stained glass windows, and Stiegel Glass collection at the church. The book is in fragile condition, however a photocopy has been made for viewing purposes.

Saint James Episcopal Church
Reverend Richard Locke, a missionary from the Church of England, established Saint James' Church in October 1744. Rev. Locke's early services were held at the Lancaster County courthouse, which was located at what is now Penn Square. During 1753, the first church building was built on North Duke Street in Lancaster. However, the church was forced to close in 1776 after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, because of their loyalties to the Church of England. The current building was built in 1820 at 119 North Duke Street, when the Saint James Sunday School opened. The church is currently known as Saint James Episcopal Church.
