General Thomas Welsh Family Papers
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie, which contains local and personal news, including a report on the progress of work on the family home and Welsh's unsuccessful candidacy for representative at the county convention. Welsh clearly misses both his wife and daughter, Alice, who are apparently on an extended visit to Annie's ister Lydia Young Karmany in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Welsh states that he plans to pick them up in Lebanon on Sunday.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to H. B. Swarr expressing much gratitude for the proceedings of the Lancaster County Convention, hoping in vain that his coming departure from public life would mitigate the “virulence” directed toward him, asking who “young Keenan” is, perhaps Frank Keenan, commenting on the detractors of Senator Douglas, and lamenting that he cannot come home because he has assumed the duties of Mr. Floyd, his former Secretary of War. Washington
