Description: The Alice E. Brown Family Papers contain genealogy and family records, deeds, land drafts, ads and ephemera for local businesses, bonds, estate papers, wills, and personal papers. Some of the deeds and maps are for property also owned by the Coates and Pownall families. Alice's father was a race horse breeder and the collection contains certificates from the American Trotting Register for some of his horses.

Admin/Biographical History: "Alice E. Brown, age 93, of Christiana, PA passed away on Monday, March 15, 2010 at Tel Hai Retirement Community. She was born in Salisbury Twp., daughter of the late John H. & Lizzie F. Brown. She was a member of Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church of Christiana. Alice graduated from the Millersville Normal School in 1934. She was a School Teacher for 7 years at the former Simmontown one-room schoolhouse. She also worked for Dr. Beacher of Gap. She was known as a wonderful artist. She was preceded in death by 4 siblings: Norris, Phares, Lela, and Leah Brown. She was the last of her immediate family. Funeral service will take place from the Shivery Funeral Home, 111 Elizabeth Street, Christiana, PA on Wednesday, March 17th, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jane DeFord officiating. Collection: Coulter and Hepler Land Records

Title: Coulter and Hepler Land Records

Description: The Coulter and Hepler Land Records contain property records for land in southeastern Lancaster County that once belonged to the Reids, Coulters, and Heplers. The records include deeds, land drafts, and articles of agreement. There is also a desk blotter for I. P. Hepler.

Admin/Biographical History: Walter R. and Esther E. Hepler (parents of donor) purchased a farm from R. M. Coulter in 1929. The farm was located in Bart Twp. and Colerain Twp. with an address of 113 Rosedale Road, Quarryville. In the early 1930s, Walter was injured in a farm accident and the family had to sell the farm in a sheriff's sale. They subsequently lived with Esther's parents and helped on their farm, earning 50¢ per week plus meals and shelter. Somehow, Walter was able to keep the family's truck through these difficult times.; He later was employed as manager at the Capital Theatre in Lancaster where he earned $14.75 per week. He moved the family into a three-story house in Lancaster with indoor plumbing and electricity, which was an exciting change for the children-James and his sister, Dorothy. As the U.S. emerged from the Depression and entered World War II, Walter used his carpentry skills to obtain a position in the shipyards and earned $2.37½ per day. James Hepler retired from Trojan Yachts as a boat-builder.

Title: Washington House (Churchtown, Pa.) Records

Description: Five guestbooks for the Washington House kept by John E. Boehringer & Son (1898-1900, 1906-1907) and Levi Alderfer (1909-1913, 1915-1918) contain the names of guests and advertisements for local buisnesses.

Admin/Biographical History: The Washington House has also been known as the Churchtown Hotel and is mostly recently referred to as the Washington Inn. The west end of building was built first, although it is unclear whether that was in the early 1700s or after 1784. The east end addition was added about 1812.; The mail stage stopped there regularly after 1820 because of the good accommodations, and the inn also attracted horseback riders. Churchtown was a popular vacation spot in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The inn, at one time, was famous for its chicken and waffle dinners. Despite more than a century of success, the invention of the automobile combined with prohibition eventually caused the business to decline.; The Washington Inn saw antique auctions on its grounds in the 1930s and continued as a restaurant through WWII. The building was renovated in 1968 by owners Mr. and Mrs. Harry Short. In 1993 the inn was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Weaver and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth D. Draude.; Petrofske, Mary T. Title: Kirk Family Papers

Description: The Kirk Family Papers contain items from the Kirk family, of Kirk's Mill, in Little Britain Twp. Ciphering and other school books of Lewis Kirk represent some of his schoolwork. Elisabeth's scrapbook from 1846 shows her interest in poetry. Legal and financial documents of Levi Kirk pertain to the sale of land, farming, medical expenses and the payment of bounties in 1864. Published works and the Columbian Almanac for 1836 are among the mid-nineteenth century items that the family saved.

Description: This collection contains documents related to Nathan Reist, a teacher, amateur photographer, and Lititz resident. These documents cover a period of roughly thirty years-from 1877 to at least 1907-and the majority concern his teaching career. Students' practice ledgers, writing books, and art evince the variety of classes taught by Reist. A ledger records the activities of a Teachers' Natural Science Club and a leaflet advertises a bee judged by Reist. The few remaining items are a mix of ephemera and advertisements.
