Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. J. Earl Way (1907-1997) of Salunga, Pennsylvania was a barber, dance instructor, and local band leader. Photograph- Old newspaper ad: John Eberman informs his friends and the public generally that he has just opened a new store in the house lately occupied by Mr. Kirkpartrick, where he offers for sale a general assortment of dry goods, groceries, saddlery, and glass and delphware, upon moderate terms. He flatters himself that from an endeavor to keep a constant supply of the above articles, and attent to business, to merit a share of the public generous patronage.
