Business card identifying Thomas Welsh as Justice of the Peace and as agent for the Commonwealth Fire Insurance Company and the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. Card can be dated to between the latter half of 1859 (when he became a Penn Mutual agent) and the first half of 1860 (when he appears to have stopped selling for Commonwealth). As Justice of the Peace, he lists his services as "Collections made and returns promptly remitted. Deeds, Bonds, Mortgages, &c. carefully prepared." Illegible writing (names) on back of card.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Fair condition; photo darkened around the edges, obscuring some of the text at the bottom. The indentations of each letter stamped or printed on the front of the card is still visible. On the backside are several names written illegibly.
