The letter fragment contains news from camp; a discussion of the acceptance by his men of discipline, temperance, drilling, etc.; a visit by Govenor Curtin's brother to visit his two sons, and the expectation of his next posting. The letter identifies him as "45" in the letters published in the Columbia Spy. Note: Although the letter fragment is not dated, its content clearly establishes its origin in Camp Hamilton, November 1861. This is a transcription of the original letter.

Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Effie. From Camp. Letter discusses the exchange of correspondence between various family members and encourages Effie to write more often. Answers Effie's request for a photograph for Miss Jones' Album. Letter describes the weather and reports that all are doing well in camp. Sends love and kisses to all, including Effie's "little friends and playmates. Note: Envelope and the letter are not matched; the envelope goes with an earlier letter from Port Royal, May 19, 1862.

Letter discusses new leave rule put in place by General Hooker to allow more officers and soldiers to visit home and that it may be some time until he can leave since he is in command of the 3rd Brigade. Welsh reports that all are doing well in camp, but notes that a number of men have deserted. Asks family to write and sends love and kisses to all.

Report details the activities of Welsh's 2nd Brigade (Willcox's 1st Division) during the battle of South Mountain. Good; some discoloration and wear along one fold. The two pieces of paper that make up this document were originally a single folio sheet halved. At some point in time, they were torn apart along the center fold. This tear is not from age or wear, and appears to have been done at the time of writing; perhaps before he began, in order to conserve paper if his report didn't extend onto a third or fourth page.
