Remarks in opposition to an anti-slavery resolution before the Senate
Description
Draft of a speech to be made by Thomas Welsh for some unknown occasion in opposition to an anti-slavery resolution before the Senate and in support of states rights/popular sovereignty. Remarks could be related to Welsh's unsuccessful bid for the Democratic Party's nomination for Congress in 1852.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Fair condition: faded ink and discoloration along folds.

Swarr including a check for payment for his state and county taxes, expressing his happiness that Great Britain has abandoned the claim of visitation, his sadness that Hiester has returned to the Republican Party, and his pleasure that the Democratic Party in Congress is united, Tennessee favors abolition, and Douglas is coming back into the Party.
