Title: Diffenderffer Family Papers

Description: The Diffenderffer Family Papers collection contains items that have been passed down through generations of the Diffenderffer family. Deeds for tracts of land in New Holland date back to the creation of New Design, the village that preceded New Holland. Correspondence and some manuscripts pertain to J. P. McCaskey's life and accomplishments. F. R. Diffenderffer's manuscripts on Easter Day and Conrad Weiser are preserved with this collection, as well as poems, a program for the C. Elvin Haupt School, and a claim of F. R. Diffenderffer & Co. against the State of Texas.

Summary: Excerpt: "[Lester] spotted an old leather book with a brass clasp in a box of other items...Lester then took the book to Earl Groff at the Hans Herr House. Earl took it to Noah Good, who translated the first part of the instription as follows: 'This book belongs to Hans Herr. If lost, would the finder return it to me because the book means so much to me. 1724.'...One cannot state absolutely that the 1710 immigrant Hans Herr owned this book. However, the Ausbund itself was definitely printed in Europe and brought to this county...The Ausbund is based on fifty-one songs written by Anabaptists imprisoned in Passau castle between 1537 and 1540...The first American printing in 1742 added more hymns for a total of 140. Today, the Ausbund is still used as a song book in Amish congregations."

Photos of gravestones in the Memorial Wall are also displayed; 5) Trinity gravestones at Landis Valley. Some of the old graveyard stones are stored at Landis Valley Museum. A listing along with some photographs are reproduced here; 6) There are several sections that attempt to accurately catalog all the graves at the old graveyard.
