Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing his pleasure that she is leaving Washington soon for Baltimore to meet Mr. Johnston’s family, regretting she has not seen Maria Weaver, relating that Miss Hetty is well again but getting old, Thomas is staying at the insistence of Father Keenan, Miss Annie is most agreeable, asking her opinion of Mr. Phillips, and praising Lily and Mr. Berghmans while complaining of indigestion. Envelope addressed care of Mr. Berghmans of the Belgian Legation.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing disappointment that she “was not pleased with the people or with the prospect of living among them”; explaining the enclosed letters, especially one from D. E. Shannon recounting “slovenly & unlawyer like” handling of the coal lands matter, advising her to consult Mr. Jenkins on the matter, a letter from Mrs. Hunter about Virginia heirs, a letter from Mr. Capens relating that James Lane will sell out for $10,000, and his arranging to pay her note at the Farmers Bank; and finally Eliza left, leaving only Mary on the domestic staff.
