Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester chatting about their male acquaintances Mandeville, Schell, Charles Wister, Dayton, Pringle, Blondeel, Bernard Barton and Captain Lee; expressing approval of Lily’s admirer Berghmans, and wondering, “What possessed Korty with the idea I had ‘grown stout.’” She also mentions President Buchanan, Ellen Wilson and Harriet, as well as "The Mill on the Floss," bracelets, rowing, and strawberries.

Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from Ben McComsey to his parents from camp near Cloud's Mill, Virginia. He reports that he is in good health and he requests letters from the family and pears. The letter originally enclosed two tintypes of Ben--one for his mother and one for Ellen Spence. With envelope and a note.
Admin/Biographical History
Benjamin was the son of William and Mary Ann (Dorwart) McComsey. In 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Ben's service during the Civil War was brief. He enlisted in Lancaster on 7 August 1862 and was mustered into the U.S. Army on August 11 as a private with Company D, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He died from typhoid fever in a military hospital at Berlin, Worcester County, Maryland on 7 November 1862.

Letter from Ben McComsey to his father regarding their arrival near Cloud's Mill, Virginia and being a new recruit, marching, pitching tents, and living on half rations. He goes on to list the prices that sutlers are asking for pies, ginger cakes, apples, watermelons, and cigars. He mentions that their last encampment was near the Alexandria Railroad and that about 5,000 acres of woods has been destroyed. The map that Ben sent home is no longer with the letter.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from Camp Piatt, Cloud Mills, Virginia. The letter was sent with Gen. Martin, Rowe, [Hess], and Franke who were visiting. He discusses their camp located 2 miles from South Mountain battlefield and about 8 miles from Antietam battlefield and near the armies of Gen. McClellan and Gen. Burnside.
There are several wholes throughout the letter along with small brown stains. In the middle of the page, there is a medium sized horzontal cut through the letter.
