Letter from Thomas Welsh to an unidentified addressee
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to an unidentified addressee. Letter contains a detailed description of Welsh's experiences in the war and his wound at Buena Vista along with an objective analysis of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the US and Mexican armies in general and in the battles of Buena Vista and Molino Del Rey. It is unclear whether this letter was written in September 1847 or 1848, but contents indicates that it was most likely written in 1848.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Very good condition, with some discoloration along fold lines and along the edge.
