He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. The first part of a review of "Shoulder-Straps: a Novel of New York and the Army, 1862." The novel was written by Henry Morford and published by T. B. Peterson & Brothers, Philadelphia in 1863. On the reverse is part of an article or letter written after Vicksburg surrendered. [The Press]. 12 August 1863.
