Poem, "The Orphan," written by Thomas Welsh, about having lost his father and mother. As he looks for friendship and support, he finds God as his father and friend.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
Good condition. No material tears or fraying. This is on the reverse side of TW-A-XX-01(h).

Two carte de visite images glued to notebook paper. Photo at top is Lillie Moore, at bottom is Julia Moore. The two were sisters and teachers at the Mount Joy Soldiers' Orphans Home in the early 1870's. Their father, John Moore, was steward of the Mount Joy Soldiers' Orphans Home.
