Pages 1 and 2 from The Dollar Newspaper (Philadelphia, PA), April 7, 1847. Contains news of the battles and soldiers of the Mexican War, poetry and original stories, and other news. "The Traitor and the Feigned Deserter: A Tale of the American Revolution," by Jeremy Skylight. "Battle of Buena Vista," "From Vera Cruz," death announcement of Lieut. Col. Henry Clay, "Mortality among Immigrants," an account of the capture of a slave ship, US Army news, a list of casualties, and a reprinted letter from President James K. Polk. Dollar Newspaper. 1847.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. The first part of a review of "Shoulder-Straps: a Novel of New York and the Army, 1862." The novel was written by Henry Morford and published by T. B. Peterson & Brothers, Philadelphia in 1863. On the reverse is part of an article or letter written after Vicksburg surrendered. [The Press]. 12 August 1863.
