Description
"West Point Tic Tacs, A Collection of Military Verse" is book belonging to Blanton C. Welsh that he recieved in West Point, New York at the military academy there. The book was published by Homer Lee & Co. of 65 Liberty Street, New York and copyrighted in 1878. The book is dedicated to the cadets and graduates of the United States Military Academy. The contents include cadet songs and poems, army poems, and other miscellaneous writings as well as illustrations all from various authors and illustrators. There are also loose interted photographs and paper cut outs throughout the pages and signature pages in the back of the book.
Pages in the front of the book are detached but remain inside the book, book spine is crakced and freyed, some pages are stained.

The book is inscribed as belonging to Blanton C. Welsh. Blanton C. Welsh wrote inside "B.C. Welsh, West Point N.Y. June 11, 1878 Class '81. The three loose photots within the book are evidently from West Point and reside between pages 112 and 113. The signatures in the back of the book date mostly from 1880-1881 but vary and date up until 1882.

A lace-bordered valentine consisting of one stanza, ten lines. The opening lines of the valentine seem to be taken from a valentine poem written by T. Tessier and included in "The Bower of Love or the Compleat Valentine Writer," 1830. Titled, "To Miss Annie Young Feby 14th, 1848." Signed "Columbia, Valentine." Note: Thomas Welsh and Annie Young were married on October 24, 1850.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Some small parts of the edge lace are missing, and the lace has largely separated from the backing sheet (along the fold line). Backing sheet is slightly torn along one fold.
