The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Dear Dorothea! This is - I think - a photo of some ancient Lancaster Co. place, as I found it with other Lanc. cards. Do you recognize it? I a bit envy my family: CSR, CGS + CGS-R today, driving through Lanc. to take CSR to Middlebury for 2 wks French seminar. Hope this catches you before you leave for Detroit and (!) Seattle. I'm staying here cooking for Daddy for the 2 weeks; doubt he wants to budge from here for me to drive him to Lanc. to check on gravestones, tho' I'd like an excuse to go. However, I have a PROJECT for here: write an article on the measles - shots hassle. You'll be hearing more soon, I hope. Thanks for the Memorial Day note. Safe journeying! Love from Margaret.

Postcard image of the Emperor's Bowl at Wheatland. Said to be the largest known porcelain in the world, was given to Buchanan by the Mikado when the first Japanese Delegation was entertained at the White House in 1860.

While you are getting well and storng we poor Lancaster people are undering if the keeps up whether we will not have to join you and Miss Emma. Tell Miss Emma I will teach my first Temperence lesson Sunday morning and I pitty the children but will do the best I can as long as Miss Emma seems to think I am equal or should be to do it.
