Title: David B. Landis Collection

Description: The David B. Landis Collection consists primarily of his personal and business correspondence, as well as his poetry and writings. Of special interest are a booklet with a synopsis autobiography of his life and his picture. There are also family papers, genealogy, membership cards, and obituaries.

Admin/Biographical History: David Bachman Landis was born in Landisville, Pennsylvania on 12 February 1862, the son of Israel C. and Mary M. Landis. As a school boy, he worked in his father's dry goods store and published a paper for boys titled Keystone Amateur. He began his printing career by apprenticing at the Inquirer Printing and Publishing Company in Lancaster in 1878, and in 1883 he opened his own job printing office in Landisville where he published the Village Vigil.; Mr. Landis moved to Lancaster in 1888 and started Pluck Art Printery. He started out in Lancaster by publishing Pluck, a magazine dedicated to the fields of printing and photography, but soon devoted his business to commercial and society printing. The name was changed in 1914 to Landis Art Print.; Printing, however, was not his only passion. He was an avid bicyclist and belonged to the Lancaster Cycling Club and the League of American Wheelmen. Through these organizations, he helped to improve the condition of roads in Pennsylvania. He was active in the Lancaster County Historical Society, the Pennsylvania German Society, the Ben Franklin Club, and Grace Lutheran Church. He wrote poetry and essays, and dedicated many pieces to friends and family.; David B. Landis married Nora K. Baker of Landisville in 1885. They had four children. Nora passed away in 1910. David married his second wife, Bertha L. Cochran, in 1914.

Description: The Danner Family Correspondence contains letters to and from members of the Danner family who lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, and Georgia, 1745-1857. The collection also includes poetry and property records. Most documents are written in English and others are in German. One letter from Mary Danner in Lancaster mentions Gen. Lafayette's visit in 1824.

Title: Bridge Records

Description: Papers filed for construction and repair of bridges. The types of petitions presented to the Court of Quarter Sessions include: petitions for bridge construction and repair, petitions for inspections, and petitions for bridge funds. Other types of items include: specifications, proposals, and contracts for bridge construction and repair; bridge blueprints and plans; correspondence; bills for materials; and bridge condition reports. Many papers show date; court term and case number; names of petitioners, viewers, inspectors, and contractors; costs and fees; location of bridge; and name or number of bridge. The order and report of viewers documents are of particular interest as they usually include a copy of the original petition; the order and names of viewers to inspect the site; the public announcement for the viewers meeting; the report and recommendation of viewers, often with a drawing of the site and surrounding area; and the court decision.

System of Arrangement: Records are arranged by township, then chronologically within each township.

The types of petitions presented to the Court of Quarter Sessions include: petitions for bridge construction and repair, petitions for inspections, and petitions for bridge funds. Other types of items include: specifications, proposals, and contracts for bridge construction and repair; bridge blueprints and plans; correspondence; bills for materials; and bridge condition reports. Many papers show date; court term and case number; names of petitioners, viewers, inspectors, and contractors; costs and fees; location of bridge; and name or number of bridge. The order and report of viewers documents are of particular interest as they usually include a copy of the original petition; the order and names of viewers to inspect the site; the public announcement for the viewers meeting; the report and recommendation of viewers, often with a drawing of the site and surrounding area; and the court decision.

System of Arrangement: Records are arranged by township, then chronologically within each township.

Freauf were generously provided by Linden Hall School, which retains the originals.; Letter 1 Letter concerns the bill of Miss Yates in the amount of 8½ cents. No date.; Letter 2 Letter making arrangements to send Miss Hobbs, Miss Dow, and the Misses Laumans for a Saturday appointment. Miss Lane will not be going, but Mr. John Ford, the driver of the carriage, is a careful driver. Wheatland, 26 September 1849.; Letter 3 Letter regretting not attending a musical presentation because of bad weather. Wheatland, 6 March 1850. Letter 4 Letter offering to send a carriage for Miss Theodora, the Misses Laumans, and his niece if they have permission to visit him. Wheatland, 13 August 1850. Letter 5 Letter announcing that Harriet Parker, sister of Miss Hetty, will accompany a pupil for the school.
