This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston noting that Misses Henrietta, Jane, and Lois arrived Friday and with Miss Jessie “constitute a lively & agreeable party”; reporting that Laura and Clemmie have left; Mr. and Mrs. Brinton, along with Miss Patty Nevin, dined at Wheatland before leaving for Europe; lamenting the death of his dog, Leo; explaining a financial matter; citing her local tax obligation; commenting favorably on the Nevins, and relating that George W. Franklin left his law practice to enter into the hardware business with his father-in-law. Envelope annotation: “May 28/66 Explaining bond.” Wheatland.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Description
This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.
